Abstract
This study examined the meditating effects of child self-determination on the relationship between mother¡¯s parenting behavior and child happiness as perceived by children. Child happiness is defined as the subjective sense of well-being based on a given the theoretical background. The subjects of this study comprised 181 children from the 5th grade of elementary school in I-city. Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis, and stepwise regression analysis were performed for the purpose of data analysis. The results of this study are as follows. First, the effects of mother parenting behavior perceived by children on a child¡¯s self-determination, and the reasoning and warmth among mother parenting behaviors both positively affected all sub factors. In particular, the opportunity for self-determination in school was found to increase when authoritative parenting behaviors were used by mothers. Neglect in terms of self-determination opportunities in the home was a low factor. Second, the effects of self-determination amongst children on their subjective well-being showed that self-determination opportunities in school and at home explained the positive well-being results. Moreover, self-determination opportunity in the home was a factor which could lower feelings of negative well-being. Third, as a result of examining whether self-determination has a mediating effect on the relationship between parenting behavior and subjective well-being, reasoning, warmth, and the intrusiveness of a mother¡¯s parenting behavior were both found to be mediated completely by self-determination in the process of moving toward positive well-being. Additionally, self-determination has a mediating effect only in terms of the warmth of a mother¡¯s parenting behavior, whilst neglect has no mediating effect but has a direct influence. In conclusion, this study confirmed the relationship between a mother¡¯s parenting behavior, children¡¯s self-determination and subjective well-being. Finally, the importance of children¡¯s self-determination was discussed.
